Ive been to Bali,and it’s a bit of a tourist trap. For instance I may not board a local bus,It had to be a bus for tourist’s.
As for traveling by Laos, Definitely not touristy,You coud travel accross Laos to savanaket as well as so although cross into Thailand at Mugdahan, or travel north to Vientienne,and enter Thailand at the friendship bridge to Nong kai,Or take a trip north to Luan prabang as well as back to V.
But why carry a back pack ? you is about to never really have to heft the thing, there is about to usually be bus drivers tuk tuk drivers or what ever .to help you. Better is a sports type travel bag with wheels as well as an extendable handle
